Cobaltite
specimen number:
2063465
location:
Hakansboda, Strassa, Lindesberg, Orebro Co., Sweden
description: Located in the Bergslagen ore region of Sweden, the Hakansboda deposit sits within an ancient Proterozoic geological setting characterized by metamorphosed volcano-sedimentary rock sequences and sulfide-impregnated carbonate zones. Mining operations at the site began as early as the fifteenth century, transitioning over the generations from early copper extraction to targeted cobalt recovery during the nineteenth century before final commercial abandonment. The historic mine dumps and underground workings became world renowned among mineral collectors for yielding exceptionally sharp, metallic crystals of cobaltite, often presenting complex pyritohedral or cubic forms embedded within sulfide-rich matrices.
Excellent Swedish classic, this a sharply formed lustrous metallic crystal of cobaltite measuring 1.4 x 1.2 x 0.8 cm in size set nicely up on matrix. This is in great condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 4.0 x 4.0 x 2.5 cm (miniature)
