location:
Holcim Quarry, Lockport, Niagara Co., New York, USA
description: The Holcim Quarry, located near Lockport in Niagara County, New York, is situated within the Silurian-age Lockport Dolomite formation. Geologically, the site features vast carbonate rock strata containing solution cavities and open vugs lined with secondary hydrothermal mineral crystallization. Historically operated for crushed stone and industrial aggregate under various company names including Frontier and Lafarge, the commercial operation gained significant fame among field collectors and mineralogists starting in the mid-twentieth century. The quarry is especially famous for producing distinctive mineral specimens, particularly lustrous spherical aggregates, pale yellow to purple cubic fluorite crystals, along with associated minerals such as white dolomite, clear calcite, and celestine.
Attractive combination specimen showing a colorless semi lustrous translucent sharp scalenohedral crystal of calcite, one side of this crystal hosting colorless blocky rhombohedral crystals of semi lustrous dolomite measuring to 0.7 cm on edge. Balanced nicely and in great condition.
