Calcite
specimen number:
2063382
location:
Lansing Mines, Brooksville, Hernando Co., Florida, USA
description: Located in Hernando County near Brooksville, Florida, the Lansing Mines sit on the Ocala Uplift, a major geological feature dominated by Eocene-aged marine limestone beds. Over millions of years, subterranean fluids dissolving the porous carbonate bedrock created extensive karst cavities and fossil voids where mineral-rich groundwater precipitated crystalline calcite. Industrial limestone quarrying and mining operations in the region revealed these underground pockets, turning the site into a notable locality for mineral collectors. The locality is well known for producing sharp calcite crystal clusters, scalpenohedral formations, and calcite-lined fossilized geodes, which remain prized specimens from Florida's unique karst mineralogy.
Very fine thumbnail for this Florida locality, a beautiful aesthetic cluster of gemmy pale yellow calcite crystals without matrix. In excellent condition all around.
Size: 2.8 x 2.7 x 1.0 cm (thumbnail)
