Calcite
specimen number:
2063356
location:
Irving Materials Corp Quarry, Anderson, Madison Co., Indiana, USA
description: Located in Madison County near Anderson, Indiana, the Irving Materials Corp Quarry (also known historically as the Pendleton Quarry) exposes Middle Devonian carbonates, primarily the Jeffersonville Limestone and Geneva Dolomite. Mining operations began in the mid-twentieth century under Irving Materials, Inc., supplying crushed limestone aggregates, gravel, and agricultural lime for construction throughout central Indiana. Beyond its commercial success, the quarry earned a reputation among mineral collectors for producing well-formed calcites, including distinct twinned crystals, along with associated occurrences of dolomite, pyrite, and fluorite.
Superb miniature for this Midwest classic. An amber colored glassy and gem sharply formed and twinned crystal of calcite mostly loose with some attached matrix. This is in great condition all around, the base is cleaved and the piece sits perfectly for display on this cleaved surface. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 4.0 x 4.0 x 2.3 cm (miniature)
