Calcite
specimen number:
9892182
location:
Crystal River, Citrus Co., Florida, USA
description: The Crystal River area in Citrus County, Florida, is situated over a thick sequence of highly porous Eocene limestone formations, primarily the Avon Park Formation and the Ocala Limestone, which have been heavily shaped by karst topography and extensive groundwater dissolution. Historically, commercial limestone quarrying in the region exposed deep pits and cavities within these ancient marine carbonate beds. Within these quarries, mineral collectors and geologists have discovered remarkable crystal deposits, most notably exceptional specimens of optical and scalenohedral calcite. These calcite formations developed as mineral-rich groundwaters slowly percolated through limestone voids, precipitating clear to honey-colored crystals that are prized by regional mineral enthusiasts.
Colorless to slightly yellowish opaque semi lustrous parallel grouping of stalactitic crystallized calcite. In good condition all around. No matrix. Quite nice for the species and locality.
