Calcite

specimen number:
2063727

location:
Buick Mine, Viburnum Trend, Iron Co., Missouri, USA

description:
An aesthetically arranged grouping of yellow lustrous slightly translucent scalenohedral calcite crystals without matrix. This is naturally crystallized all around. The prominent crystal is double terminated. This is in very good condition. From the late 1990s, the specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.

Situated along the western flank of the St. Francois Mountains in Iron County, the Buick Mine represents a cornerstone of the Viburnum Trend, widely known as the New Lead Belt. Discovered in 1960 and brought into production in 1969, the underground operation targeted massive Mississippi Valley-type sulfide ore bodies hosted within Bonneterre Formation dolomites. Mineralizing fluids migrating through regional strata deposited rich concentrations of lead, zinc, and copper sulfides. For mineral collectors, the Buick Mine achieved legendary status by yielding world-class cabinet specimens, most notably sharp gunmetal galena cubes, distinctive pyrite bars, rare nickel-cobalt sulfide phases, and lustrous associated calcite crystals.
