Calcite
specimen number:
2062870
location:
Linwood Mine, Scott Co., Iowa, USA
description: The Linwood Mine in Scott County, Iowa, operating continuously since 1944, is a massive underground limestone operation situated within Paleozoic sedimentary strata along the Mississippi River. While primarily developed for high-grade aggregate and industrial lime production, the mine has gained renown among mineral collectors for distinct cavity-filling specimens. Miners and collectors have retrieved exceptional barite crystals from these vugs and solution openings. The barite from this locality typically occurs as transparent to translucent clusters, often prized for their complex habit, high luster, and unique etched or solution-rounded surfaces.
A sharp grouping of glassy gem scalenohedral calcite crystals, the prominent crystal 5.0 cm in height, coming off matrix. These are accented nicely with micro crystals of golden marcasite both on the outside of the calcite and as inclusions within. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
