The El Potosi Mine, located in the historic Santa Eulalia district of Chihuahua, Mexico, began formal large-scale modern commercial operations in the late 19th century—specifically around the 1880s to 1900s—following centuries of intermittent Spanish colonial activity in the region that started in 1591. The mine has experienced temporary suspensions and periods of inactivity, most notably due to severe flooding issues in recent decades that halted active industrial extraction, though dewatering and rehabilitation efforts have been underway. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within a thick sequence of Cretaceous limestone and shale formations that have been intruded by Tertiary igneous sills and dikes. The mineralization primarily occurs as massive sulfide replacement bodies and skarns alongside extensive near-surface oxidized zones, yielding significant concentrations of silver, lead, and zinc.
