Calcite
specimen number:
1213003
location:
Sweetwater mine, Viburnum Trend, Reynolds Co., Missouri, USA
description:
A wonderful example from this famous find, this is a grouping of scalenohedral dark lustrous calcite crystals set on a small amount of breccia matrix. Iridescent crystals of chalcopyrite are scattered across the matrix. Contacting is present on the back of one of the terminations, this matrix which is coated with beautiful iridescent chalcopyrite. I would guess that 98% of the specimens from this large pocket were recovered damaged. Despite the damage, and in some cases a lot of damage, the specimens were bringing very high prices. This one is as perfect as they get, and the quality is top. The dark color is due to inclusions of chalcopyrite.
