location:
Orchard Quarry, Buckfield, Oxford Co., Maine, USA
description: The Orchard Quarry, located in Buckfield within the Oxford County pegmatite field of Maine, is situated in a complex granitic pegmatite body that intruded into the regional metamorphic host rocks during the Paleozoic era. Historically, the site began as a mineral prospect before being developed primarily for industrial minerals such as feldspar and beryl, which were extracted for use in ceramics and manufacturing. Over the decades, intensive mining and quarrying operations exposed rich coarse-grained mineral pockets, turning the location into a well known destination for rockhounds and mineral collectors searching for colorful accessory crystals and diverse pegmatite specimens.
A pale blue lustrous translucent crystal of beryl, this the variety known as aquamarine, 1.3 cm in length embedded up on a massive quartz matrix. The crystal is terminated, the termination is crude but natural.
