Beryl
specimen number:
2062949
location:
Izumrudnye Kopi, Malyshevo, Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia
description: The Izumrudnye Kopi district in the Sverdlovsk Oblast of Russia, anchored by the Malyshevo (or Mariinsky) deposit, features a unique geology where pegmatitic and granitic hydrothermal fluids intrude into ultramafic host rocks, supplying chromium for coloration and creating phlogopite-actinolite schists. Mining and mineral collecting history here began in 1830 when green crystals were discovered in the roots of a fallen tree, leading to imperial commercial extraction starting in 1831 that yielded world-class emeralds and alexandrites. During the Soviet era, the operations shifted heavily toward industrial beryllium production alongside gemstone recovery, and today the region remains a celebrated underground mining center for high-grade Russian emeralds.
Lustrous slightly translucent green crystal section of beryl, this the variety known as emerald, measuring 1.7 x 1.0 cm in size embedded up on a schist matrix. Neither crystal termination is exposed, the quality of the crystal is quite nice. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 6.0 x 5.0 x 1.5 cm (miniature)
