Barite
specimen number:
2354047
location:
Cleveland Co., Oklahoma, USA
description: Located in central Oklahoma, USA, Cleveland County is famous for producing "barite roses," which are distinctive rosette-shaped aggregations of barite crystals containing trapped sand grains. Formed during the Permian Period roughly 250 million years ago, these unique formations developed as groundwater rich in barium and sulfate precipitated within the porous red sandstones of the Garber Sandstone formation. Native American folklore historically connected these striking rock formations to spiritual legends, and in 1968 Oklahoma officially designated the barite rose as its official state rock, cementing Cleveland County as a legendary collecting locality for mineral enthusiasts worldwide.
A classic example of what many refer to as a barite rose, this a sand infused crystal grouping of barite crystals in the shape of a rose. Complete all around and in good condition with no points of attachment.
Size: 6.0 x 5.0 x 3.0 cm (small-cabinet)
