location:
Mt. Malosa, Zomba, Malawi
description: Mt. Malosa in Zomba, Malawi, is a prominent peralkaline granitic and syenitic intrusion belonging to the Chilwa Alkaline Province, famed for its exceptional miarolitic cavities that yield world-class rare mineral specimens. The area has a rich history of artisanal collecting and small-scale mining by local prospectors who extract pristine crystals from weathered pegmatitic pockets. Among the extraordinary assemblage of minerals found in these cavities is arfvedsonite, a dark, complex sodium-iron amphibole that forms sharp, prismatic crystals highly prized by systematic mineral collectors and museums globally.
Excellent lustrous striated thick black crystals of arfvedsonite measuring to 2.2 x 2.0 x 0.5 cm in size arranged nicely up on a microcline crystal matrix. As is in very good condition and quite nice for the species.
