location:
Ojos Espanoles Mine, General Lazaro Cardenas, Julimes, Chihuahua, Mexico
description: The Ojos Espanoles Mine, located near General Lazaro Cardenas in the municipality of Julimes, Chihuahua, Mexico, is a notable mineral locality characterized by skarn-type geology associated with regional intrusive activity altering carbonate host rocks. Historically small-scale in its commercial mining footprint, the site has gained significant recognition within the collector community for producing exceptional crystal specimens, most notably lustrous and well-formed crystals of andradite garnet (specifically the dark melanite variety). Mineral collectors and field explorers target the locality for these distinct silicate specimens, which form through contact metamorphism in the arid mining district.
Brilliant lustrous sharp black crystals of andradite to 1.7 cm in size covering the front of matrix. In good condition, an aesthetic miniature for this classic Mexican material. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. I believe this dates to the 1980s.
Size: 4.0 x 3.0 x 2.0 cm (miniature)
