Zinkenite
specimen number:
2354230
location:
Brobdignag Mine, San Juan Co., Colorado, USA
description: Located on Anvil Mountain within the rugged San Juan Mountains of Colorado, the Brobdignag Mine sits in an area shaped by complex volcanic and hydrothermal activity that produced rich mineralized veins. Historically significant as a small prospect in the region, the mine gained scientific and mineralogical fame as the site of the first authenticated occurrence of zinkenite in the United States. Zinkenite itself is a rare steel-gray sulfide mineral characterized by slender, metallic, needle-like crystals and acicular aggregates that form within hydrothermal ore veins alongside other rare sulfosalt minerals.
Very rich bright metallic silver masses of zinkenite on matrix. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Jack Nieburger.
