Zincite in Tephroite
specimen number:
2062656
location:
Ogdensburg, Sussex Co., New Jersey, USA
description: Ogdensburg, New Jersey, developed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as a prominent mining and industrial community rooted in the rich Wallkill River valley. Originally settled by agricultural families seeking refuge during the Revolutionary era, the town transformed rapidly following the extensive extraction of iron and localized mineral wealth. Geologically, the area is internationally renowned for the Sterling Hill deposit, where ancient marine sediments were subjected to intense heat, pressure, and regional metamorphism over one billion years ago within the Franklin Marble formation. This complex tectonic history produced an exceptionally dense concentration of rare mineral species, many of which exhibit distinct fluorescence, establishing Ogdensburg as a world-famous locality for geological study and underground mining heritage.
Rich massive pink tephroite throughout matrix hosting deep red masses of zincite. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 5.0 x 4.5 x 2.0 cm (miniature)
