Wulfenite with Calcite
specimen number:
2062628
location:
Defiance Mine, Cochise Co., Arizona, USA
description: The Defiance Mine, located in the Turquoise and Courtland-Gleeson mining districts of Cochise County, Arizona, saw sporadic production of lead, zinc, silver, and copper beginning in the late nineteenth century and continuing through the mid-twentieth century. Geologically, the site is characterized by scattered oxidized ore bodies formed along prominent fault fissures and brecciated zones in Paleozoic limestone near its contact with intrusive quartz monzonite. These underground workings targeted replacement-style deposits where hydrothermal activity and extensive oxidation created rich zones of diverse secondary minerals.
Attractive grouping of lustrous caramel colored thin platy wulfenite crystals. Colorless rhombohedral crystals of calcite to 1.0 cm in size are scattered across the top and backside of the cluster. This is in really good condition all around. Choice miniature for this famous locality. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 5.0 x 4.0 x 1.0 cm (miniature)
