The San Francisco Mine (often associated with Cerro Prieto) near Cucurpe, Sonora, Mexico, is celebrated by mineral collectors for producing world-class specimen material rather than bulk industrial ore, with focused underground collecting operations notably active during periods like the 1970s and again from August 1993 to January 1995. Geologically, the deposit is situated within complex regional volcanic and sedimentary host rocks where hydrothermal circulation and oxidation processes facilitated the formation of exceptional secondary lead and molybdenum minerals. The site is especially famous for yielding brilliant, razor-thin, honey-yellow to orange wulfenite crystal plates, frequently associated with vibrant green or yellow mimetite and barite within oxidized fracture zones and cavities.
