Somewhat rounded but very nice lustrous crystals of willemite to 1.5 cm in size embedded throughout a massive pink calcite matrix. Small grains of black franklinite are scattered throughout. In great condition brightly fluorescent. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.

Franklin, New Jersey, historically renowned as the fluorescent mineral capital of the world, sits within the Franklin Mining District in the New Jersey Highlands. Geologically, the deposit consists of unique, intensely metamorphosed Neoproterozoic ore bodies hosted within carbonate rocks, formed through complex hydrothermal and metamorphic events that concentrated rare zinc, iron, and manganese minerals. The mining history dates back to the mid-17th century for iron exploration, but large-scale commercial extraction of zinc ores began in the 19th century, driven by companies like the New Jersey Zinc Company. Underground operations at the famous Sterling and Franklin mines continued for over a century before closing in the late 20th century, transforming the area into a legendary locality recognized globally for its unmatched diversity of over three hundred mineral species, many of which exhibit brilliant fluorescence under ultraviolet light.
