Wickenburgite
specimen number:
2354039
location:
Potter-Cramer Mine, Maricopa Co., Arizona, USA
description: The Potter-Cramer Mine, located southwest of Wickenburg in Maricopa County, Arizona, features oxidized, quartz-bearing veins cutting volcanic breccia that historically yielded lead, silver, and gold. First claimed in the 1920s and actively mined in the mid-twentieth century, the site became famous in 1967 when research geologist Sidney A. Williams collected specimens from the mine dumps. His discovery led to the formal identification of wickenburgite, a rare silicate mineral for which the mine serves as the type locality. Occurring typically as white, colorless, or pinkish micro-crystals that display a distinctive reddish-orange fluorescence under shortwave ultraviolet light, wickenburgite made the locality a celebrated destination for mineral collectors.
White micro crystals and masses of wickenburgite, this fairly rich, across the front of matrix. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ralph Dietz.
