description: Slate Mountain in El Dorado County, California, is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills within a rugged metamorphic terrain dominated by slates and gold-bearing quartz vein systems. The local mining operations, notably the Slate Mountain Mine, were developed primarily for lode gold and were worked intermittently from 1921 to 1941, with final minor production in 1951. While the site is chiefly known historically for these gold-bearing quartz veins, it gained additional mineralogical fame as the only known locality in California for the mineral wavellite, which was collected as rare green botryoidal crusts during localized finds in the mid-twentieth century.
Green crystallized groupings of wavellite measuring to 0.7 cm in diameter across one side of matrix. This is in good condition. Very choice for the species and locality.
