Volborthite
specimen number:
2354030
location:
Monument Valley, Navajo Co., Arizona, USA
description: Situated on the Colorado Plateau in Navajo County, Arizona, USA, Monument Valley is famous for its dramatic sandstone formations and uranium-vanadium ore deposits hosted primarily within the Permian to Triassic sandstone strata. Extensively mined during the mid-twentieth century mid-century uranium boom, these sedimentary deposits yielded significant amounts of vanadium and uranium ores along with notable secondary minerals. Among mineral collectors, the locality is well known for producing fine specimens of volborthite, a rare hydrated copper vanadate mineral that typically forms as bright yellow-green to olive-green scales, rosettes, or crusts in oxidized vanadium-rich sandstone zones.
Yellowish green very rich crystallized volborthite across the top of matrix. In good condition. The specimen comes with a label from the collection of Jack Nieburger.
