Vesuvianite
specimen number:
2354023
location:
Crestmore Quarries, Riverside Co., California, USA
description: Located in Riverside County, California, the Crestmore Quarries are world-famous among geologists and mineral collectors for their extraordinary contact metamorphic geology. Formed where Mesozoic granitic intrusions metamorphosed Paleozoic limestone and dolomite deposits, the site produced a vast array of rare skarn minerals, including the type locality specimens for crestmoreite and riversideite. Commercial mining for cement manufacturing began in the early twentieth century, which exposed rich mineralized zones and allowed collectors and researchers to recover over one hundred distinct mineral species from the complex metamorphic skarns.
A massive blue calcite matrix is mostly covered with yellowish green crystals of vesuvianite measuring to almost 1.0 cm in size. Good rich example for the species and locality. In good condition.
