Vesuvianite
specimen number:
2063241
location:
Sierra de Cruces, Sierra Mojada, Coahuila, Mexico
description: The Sierra de Cruces region, located within the Sierra Mojada municipality of Coahuila, Mexico, is famous in mineralogy for its contact metamorphic skarn deposits formed where igneous intrusions interacted with surrounding limestone beds. Historically, specimens from this area were often mislabeled under the name Lake Jaco, a nearby landmark in neighboring Chihuahua, but the locality is celebrated among mineral collectors for producing exceptional mineral specimens. The site is world-renowned for its distinct raspberry-red to pinkish grossular garnet crystals, often exhibiting striking color zoning, as well as lustrous blocky tan to brownish-yellow vesuvianite crystals nestled on contrasting matrix rocks.
A choice loose double terminated lustrous sharply formed crystal of vesuvianite. A floater with no points of attachment, in excellent condition.
