description: The mining district of Fengtien in Shoufeng Township, Hualien County, Taiwan, is historically renowned as a major global source of soft jade. Modern commercial mining operations began around 1961 to 1965 following earlier Japanese colonial extraction of asbestos, reaching peak production and global export prominence through the 1960s and 1970s. Due to global economic recessions, rising operational deficits, and resource depletion, large-scale commercial mining gradually ceased, leading to the closure of the official mines by approximately 1986. Geologically, the deposits are situated within the metamorphic belt of the Central Mountain Range, specifically occurring along the contact zones between serpentinite, black schist, and green schist. The region's soft jade formed through complex regional metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration processes involving ultramafic parent rocks interacting with surrounding fluids, producing abundant silicate minerals.
Unusual locality example with beautiful yellow green prismatic gemmy crystals of vesuvianite to 1.5 cm in length across the top of matrix. This is in good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
