Variscite with Crandallite
specimen number:
2062814
location:
Clay Canyon, Fairfield, Utah Co., Utah, USA
description: The geology of Clay Canyon near Fairfield, Utah, features secondary mineralization where groundwaters rich in elements leached from surrounding strata deposited localized nodules and vein fillings within fractured sedimentary host rocks. Variscite, a rare green mineral formed through these low temperature aqueous processes, occurs here as striking nodules frequently encased by associated secondary minerals. Following local discovery in the late 19th century, the site was actively mined and prospected by mineral collectors and lapidaries. Today, material from this canyon is internationally celebrated by museums and collectors for its exceptional color variations and intricate internal nodular patterns.
A beautiful classic specimen from Utah, this half nodule of mostly massive variscite, cut and polished to show the interior. Yellow crandallite is present as well. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 12.0 x 11.0 x 5.5 cm (cabinet)
