Vanadinite on Coronadite
specimen number:
2341117
location:
Taouz Caidat, Er-Rissani Cercle, Errachidia, Draa-Tafilalet, Morocco
description: The geology of Taouz in southeastern Morocco is characterized by rugged desert terrain featuring Paleozoic sedimentary and volcanic rocks rich in diverse metallic mineral deposits, particularly iron and manganese oxides that form striking stalactitic and vuggy mineral formations. Historically, small scale mining and prospecting in this remote desert area date back decades, driven by both commercial extraction and a thriving local mining community. In recent years, the region has gained international renown among mineral collectors and museums for producing exceptional aesthetic specimens of vanadinite on coronadite associated rare secondary mineral species.
Collected around 1980, mostly lustrous red crystals of vanadanite to 1.5 cm in size mostly covering the front of a botryoidal black coronadite matrix. This is in great condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Jan Erik Larsen.
