Vanadinite
specimen number:
2062629
location:
Old Yuma Mine, Pima Co., Arizona, USA
description: Located in the Tucson Mountains within what is now Saguaro National Park West, the Old Yuma Mine dates back to initial claims in the 1870s and operated sporadically as a producer of lead, copper, silver, and gold until its final closure in 1947. Geologically, the deposit sits within a complex Cretaceous volcanic caldera terrain where hydrothermal activity and fault-controlled dikes introduced base-metal sulfides. Subsequent deep oxidation weathering of these veins transformed the primary ores into a famous collection locality renowned for bright crystals of wulfenite and vanadinite.
Lustrous orange red crystals of vanadinite to 0.4 cm in size throughout all sides of this breccia matrix. In good condition, nice miniature for this classic old Arizona locality. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
