description: Power's Farm in Pierrepont, St. Lawrence County, New York, is a historic mineral collecting site located on a prominent ridge of metamorphic rock formed within the Grenville Province. Known for well over a century, the site has been a favorite destination for amateur rockhounds and museum curators alike, with local groups continuing to host organized digs on the property to unearth remarkable crystal specimens. The famous black crystals found at this location were historically labeled as schorl, but modern scientific analysis has reclassified them as members of the uvite-dravite series within the complex silicate tourmaline group. This series defines a specific range of ring-silicate mineral species characterized by structural variations involving elements like sodium, calcium, magnesium, and iron.
Very sharp brilliant lustrous crystal of uvite-dravite on matrix with several smaller crystals. This is in great condition. Specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. This label notes that the specimen was collected by Jim Dee in July, 1988.
