Thomsonite

specimen number:
2354170

location:
Eysturoy, Faroe Islands

description:
An excellent example for the species and locality, white crystallized balls of thomsonite to 1.0 cm in diameter on a basalt matrix. The specimen is in good condition and comes with a previous label from the Royal Scottish Museum.

Located on Eysturoy, the second-largest of the Faroe Islands, the regional geology is dominated by thick Paleocene flood basalt sequences that erupted during the early opening of the North Atlantic Ocean. Over geological time, circulating low-temperature hydrothermal fluids percolated through fractures and gas-formed vesicles in these volcanic flows, precipitating rich assemblages of secondary zeolite minerals along cavity walls. Historical mining was virtually nonexistent due to a lack of commercial ore deposits, but the island became renowned among naturalists and field collectors in the nineteenth century for producing world-class mineral specimens. Eysturoy is particularly famous as a classic locality for thomsonite, a calcium-sodium zeolite that forms distinct, radiating white to pale-cream spherical aggregates and spiky hemispherical sprays inside dark basalt vugs. These Faroese thomsonite formations were so structurally characteristic that early mineralogists historically assigned them the variety name faroelite. Today, field collecting on Eysturoy is restricted by regional preservation efforts and property access regulations, though historic specimens remain prized additions in museum collections around the world.
