Hagendorf South Pegmatite, Hagendorf, Waidhaus, Upper Palatinate, Bavaria, Germany
description: Located near Waidhaus in Bavaria, Germany, the Hagendorf South pegmatite is an internationally renowned granitic pegmatite famous for its extraordinary secondary phosphate mineral assemblage. Formed through ancient magmatic differentiation, the core zone of the pegmatite underwent complex hydrothermal alteration and weathering, transforming primary triphylite-lithiophilite masses into dozens of rare secondary species. Commercial mining targeted feldspar and quartz throughout the twentieth century, which exposed rich phosphate pockets and made the locality a legendary destination for mineral collectors and researchers. Among the notable species discovered and collected at this site is strunzite, a hydrous iron manganese phosphate that forms delicate yellow to brownish-yellow hair-like needles and straw-like fibrous aggregates in cavity spaces. Although active mining eventually ended and access became restricted, Hagendorf South remains celebrated in mineralogical history as the type locality for strunzite and numerous other secondary phosphate minerals.
Brownish-yellow colored acicular crystals of strunzite in groupings to 0.5 cm in length, this very rich and thick across matrix with many other species as shown on the previous label from the collection of Eric Laskowski. I think this quite good for the species.
