The Toutle River in Cowlitz County, Washington, flows westward from the western slopes of the Cascade Range near Mount St. Helens, gaining widespread historical recognition primarily for carrying massive volumes of volcanic debris and mudflows during the cataclysmic 1980 eruption. Geologically, the region is characterized by late Eocene to early Oligocene volcanic and volcaniclastic bedrock overlaid by extensive glacial drift and complex sequences of Holocene and Pleistocene eruptive materials from Mount St. Helens. Within the basaltic flows and volcaniclastic host rocks of this active volcanic terrain, mineral-rich hydrothermal waters have circulated over time to form cavities and vesicles, allowing secondary hydrous framework silicates like stilbite to crystallize alongside other characteristic zeolites.
