Spinel
specimen number:
2062956
location:
Gon deposit, Aldan, Sakha, Russia
description: The Gon deposit in the Aldan region of Sakha, Russia, is hosted within the ancient crystalline basement of the Aldan Shield, characterized by deeply metamorphosed Precambrian rocks associated with phlogopite-bearing magnesian skarns. Historically developed for its mica resources through underground and surface mining operations, the deposit is also well known to mineral collectors for producing exceptional specimens of accessory minerals. Among these, spinel crystals--particularly dark varieties such as pleonaste--frequently occur within the skarn zones alongside other silicates like diopside.
Lustrous black sharp crystals of spinel measuring to 2.0 cm in size on matrix with minor calcite. In great condition, choice miniature for the species and locality. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
