Sphaerocobaltite
specimen number:
2063001
location:
Kamoto, Mutshatsha, Lualaba, DR Congo
description: Located within the rich metallogenic province of Lualaba in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Kamoto area features complex sediment-hosted copper and cobalt deposits embedded within the Katanga Copperbelt geological formations. Commercial mining operations expanded significantly through the twentieth century, transforming the region into a global center for industrial mineral extraction while also producing exceptional secondary minerals in its oxidation zones. Among these, sphaerocobaltite forms striking pink to rose-colored crusts and spherical aggregates, highly prized by mineral collectors for its vivid coloration and rarity within the weathered strata of these world-class deposits.
Attractive purplish red micro crystalline sphaerocobaltite across the top of matrix. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark and dates to the 1990s.
Size: 5.0 x 3.0 x 2.5 cm (miniature)
Collection: Ray DeMark
