Spangolite on Fluorite
specimen number:
2063390
location:
Mex-Tex Mine, Bingham, New Mexico, USA
description: Located in the Hansonburg District near Bingham, Socorro County, New Mexico, the Mex-Tex Mine is situated within a complex system of lead-zinc-barite hydrothermal vein deposits hosted in Pennsylvanian limestone formations. Mining operations began in the late nineteenth century primarily for lead and fluorite, but the site later became famous among mineral collectors for its diverse array of secondary copper minerals. Mining and active specimen collecting at the Mex-Tex Mine produced exceptional micro-crystals of spangolite, a rare hydrated copper aluminum sulfate mineral. These dark blue to blue-green hexagonal tabular crystals, often found resting on quartz or barite matrix, remain prized highlights among specimen collectors worldwide.
Deep blue lustrous spangolite micro crystals scattered across the top of a 1.0 cm wide cubic fluorite crystal in a pocket. Barite is present as well. This is in very good condition and quite choice for the species. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. He self collected the specimen.
Size: 4.5 x 3.5 x 3.0 cm (miniature)
Collection: Ray DeMark
