Smithsonite with Aurichalcite
specimen number:
2063289
location:
79 Mine, Gila Co., Arizona, USA
description: Located in the Chilito area of Gila County, Arizona, the 79 Mine is a famed complex lead-zinc-copper ore deposit hosted within Paleozoic limestone beds that were heavily faulted and intruded by igneous dikes. Discovered in 1879, the site was initially worked as a lead, zinc, and silver producer, but it later gained widespread renown among specimen collectors for its extraordinary secondary oxidation minerals. The mine is particularly famous for producing spectacular, bright apple-green smithsonite specimens, which typically form as gleaming botryoidal crusts and translucent, sparkling crusts in oxidized caverns and fractures throughout the underground workings.
Green botryoidal crystallized smithsonite on matrix. In good condition. Sky-blue acicular aurichalcite is present as well. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. He collected the piece on February 8, 1995.
Size: 4.5 x 3.0 x 2.8 cm (miniature)
