Sinnerite with Sphalerite, Galena, Quartz, Pyrite
specimen number:
2354086
location:
La Luz, Guanajuato, Mexico
description: Located within the historic Guanajuato mining district of central Mexico, La Luz is situated along the famous La Luz vein system, an epithermal mineral deposit hosted in Mesozoic volcanic and sedimentary sequences. Discovery of rich silver-bearing veins in the sixteenth century established La Luz as one of the earliest and most productive mining hubs in the region, driving centuries of extensive underground extraction for silver, copper, and lead ores. Although La Luz is historically famous for silver minerals such as acanthite and pyrargyrite, hydrothermal vein systems in the district also provide localized environments where rare copper arsenic sulfides like sinnerite can form as minute inclusions or associated micro-mineral occurrences prized by specialized mineral collectors.
Sparse tiny platy metallic crystals of sinnerite measuring to 0.15 cm in size isolated throughout this matrix with micro crystals of sphalerite and galena. Minor quartz and pyrite present as well. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Eric Laskowski. A second label comes with the piece as well.
