Siderite with Quartz
specimen number:
9302395
location:
Neudorf, Harzgerode, Harz, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany
description: Located in the eastern Lower Harz region of Germany, Neudorf near Harzgerode is famous for its hydrothermal ore vein deposits hosted in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, primarily Devonian slate, greywacke, and quartzite. Mining in the area dates back to the Middle Ages, with operations expanding significantly between the 16th and 19th centuries as shafts like Pfaffenberg and Meiseberg extracted high-grade silver, lead, copper, and iron ores. The region gained legendary status among mineral collectors for producing world-class crystallized specimens, including exceptional cogwheel bournonite, silver-bearing galena, chalcopyrite, siderite, tetrahedrite, and fluorite. Though industrial operations ceased in the early 20th century, Neudorf remains celebrated in mineralogy, and classic specimens collected during its active mining days are preserved in major museum collections worldwide.
Classic German specimen with lustrous rhombohedral crystals of siderite measuring to 1.5 cm in size nice across the top of a sparkling crystallized quartz matrix. This is in good condition. The specimen comes with a previous collection label as shown at the end of the video.
