description: The historic Morro Velho Mine located in Nova Lima, Minas Gerais, Brazil, began operations in 1834 and permanently closed in 2003, functioning for nearly two centuries as one of the deepest and most productive gold mines in the Americas. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within the Precambrian rocks of the Nova Lima Group, consisting predominantly of greenstone belt assemblages such as metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary sequences, where gold mineralization occurs within massive sulphide replacement lodes, quartz veins, and shear zones.
All Brazilian classic with lustrous lenticular slightly translucent crystals of siderite measuring to 2.5 cm in size across the top of matrix. Small glassy colorless crystals of dolomite are present, as well as metallic crystals of pyrrhotite. Cubanite is also likely present. This is in great condition. The specimen comes with a previous collection label from Ray DeMark.
