Semenovite-Ce with Albite, Epididymite, Aegirine

specimen number:
2354134

location:
Taseq Slope, Ilimaussaq, Kujalleq, Greenland

description:
Tan colored pseudo-octahedral crystals of the mineral semenovite-ce in a matrix rich with albite. Minor epididymitis and aegirine present as well. Very choice for this rare species. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Eric Laskowski.

Located within the vast Ilimaussaq alkaline complex in Kujalleq, Greenland, the Taseq Slope features a rugged landscape of peralkaline nepheline syenites, pegmatites, and hydrothermal veins enriched in rare elements. Geological exploration and mineral collecting in this remote arctic region have yielded numerous unique species from specialized veins cutting through the host rocks. Among the notable discoveries is semenovite-ce, a rare hydrous fluorosilicate mineral containing beryllium and rare-earth elements that occurs as yellowish or brownish tabular crystals in pegmatitic and hydrothermal environments. Although large-scale industrial mining has not been the primary focus here, the locality remains legendary among mineralogists and advanced field collectors for its exceptionally diverse inventory of rare accessory minerals.
