Rutile with Pyrophyllite
specimen number:

location:
Graves Mtn., Lincoln Co., Georgia, USA
description: Graves Mountain in Lincoln County, Georgia, is a world-renowned mineral locality formed through intense regional metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration of ancient sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Its complex geology produced unique quartz-rich schist formations that later drew commercial mining interest for industrial materials during the twentieth century. Although industrial operations eventually ceased, the mountain remains internationally famous among rock collectors for producing exceptional, lustrous, dark red to black rutile crystals alongside other notable mineral specimens.
A large lustrous thick double terminated crystal of rutile 6.0 x 3.3 x 3.0 cm in size along one edge of a micaceous pyrophyllite rich matrix. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. He collected the piece in 1968.
Size: 14.0 x 6.0 x 4.0 cm (cabinet)
