Rhodonite with Galena
specimen number:
2063200
location:
North Mine, Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia
description: Broken Hill is a historic mining city located in far western New South Wales, Australia. Founded in 1883 after the discovery of a massive, boomerang-shaped ore deposit on an isolated ragged outcrop, it grew to become home to one of the largest deposits of silver, lead, and zinc in the world. The city's rich mining operations spurred the creation of major industrial enterprises and played a foundational role in shaping Australia's modern economy and labor movement.
Deep red blocky translucent crystals of lustrous rhodonite to 1.5 cm in size embedded throughout a massive galena matrix. The prominent rhodonite crystal is mostly free from the matrix and shows nicely. This is in good condition. Classic material for the species and locality. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 5.0 x 3.5 x 3.0 cm (miniature)
