Rhodochrosite with Quartz

specimen number:
9731006

location:
Sweet Home Mine, Park Co., Colorado, USA

description:
Lustrous highly translucent to gemmy pinkish red rhombohedral crystals of rhodochrosite measuring to 0.7 cm on edge scattered attractively across the front of matrix with crystallized quartz. All of the rhodochrosite crystals, and there are many, are in very good condition. Slight micro-damage present to a couple of the small quartz crystals, I think that this is non-consequential. A showy and very nice Colorado classic.

The Sweet Home Mine, located near Alma in Park County, Colorado, is situated within the Mount Antero intrusive complex of the Sawatch Range, where Tertiary-age granitic stocks injected hydrothermal fluids into surrounding Precambrian host rocks. During the cooling of these igneous bodies, rich mineralized veins filled fault fissures, depositing manganese-rich carbonate solutions alongside quartz, fluorite, and sulfides. Originally opened in the late 19th century as a silver mine during the Colorado silver boom, the deposit proved modest in precious metals, but miners continuously encountered striking red crystals. In the late 20th century, dedicated specimen mining operations transformed the site into one of the most famous gem mineral localities in the world. The mine is world-renowned for producing the finest known specimens of rhodochrosite, celebrated by collectors for their intense cherry-red color, exceptional transparency, and distinct rhombohedral crystal habit on contrasting quartz and tetrahedrite matrix.
