location:
Sunnyside Mine, San Juan Co., Colorado, USA
description: The Sunnyside Mine, located near Silverton in San Juan County, Colorado, is a historic underground operation renowned for precious and base metal production, including gold, silver, lead, and zinc. Situated within the rugged volcanic terrain of the San Juan volcanic field, the deposit consists of complex hydrothermal vein systems hosted in Tertiary volcanic and intrusive rocks associated with caldera collapse structures. Discovered in the late nineteenth century, the mine experienced extensive production cycles through the twentieth century, particularly under later corporate operators before closing in 1991. It is also famous among mineral collectors for producing world-class specimens of rhodochrosite, quartz, and associated sulfide minerals.
A loose fine grouping of pink opaque lustrous somewhat skeletal rhombohedral rhodochrosite crystals. In great condition.
