Rhodochrosite
specimen number:
2063159
location:
Urad mine, Dailey, Clear Creek Co., Colorado, USA
description: The Urad Mine, situated near Dailey and Empire in Clear Creek County, Colorado, is hosted primarily within Precambrian and Oligocene granitic rocks associated with Red Mountain and the Colorado Mineral Belt. Geologically, the deposit is a classic stockwork-style porphyry system rich in molybdenum, characterized by an arcuate orebody formed through complex intrusive episodes. Historically, prospectors first made shallow cuts in the early 1900s, and intermittent small-scale operations took place through the mid-century under various owners. The property underwent major industrial expansion when American Metal Climax acquired it, leading to intensive underground production from 1967 until the orebody was depleted and the mine closed in 1974, after which surface facilities were removed and the site reclaimed.
A loose pinkish red glassy translucent rhombohedral crystal of rhodochrosite without matrix. In great condition. Nice thumbnail for the species and locality.
Size: 1.6 x 1.0 x 0.7 cm (thumbnail)
