Rhodochrosite

specimen number:
2063146

location:
N'Chwaning Mines, Northern Cape, South Africa

description:
Classic gorgeous thumbnail specimen for this mining district, the specimen consists of a red glassy gem quality absolutely perfect scalenohedral crystal of rhodochrosite. In super condition all around. The quality, in terms of color and transparency, is excellent. Note that most of these on the market, despite the fact that the dealer says the crystals are perfect, they do show cleaving on their terminations. This one does not.

The N'Chwaning Mines, situated within the Kalahari Manganese Field of South Africa's Northern Cape Province, are hosted in the ancient sedimentary sequences of the Hotazel Formation. This world-class deposit has been heavily exploited through underground operations spanning multiple shafts since the 1970s to extract rich industrial metal ores. Beyond commercial extraction, these mines achieved global renown among mineral collectors and museums for yielding spectacular, world-class crystal specimens, most notably vibrant pink rhodochrosite and high-grade purple sugilite.
