Located in the Conselheiro Pena district of Minas Gerais, Brazil, the Cigana claim at Barra do Cuiete is situated within the famed Eastern Brazilian Pegmatite Province. The locality consists of complex granite pegmatites intruded into ancient metamorphic rocks, where extensive geochemical differentiation produced pocket systems lined with gem minerals, phosphates, and rare oxides. Active mining since the mid-twentieth century has primarily targeted industrial feldspar and gem-quality tourmaline or beryl, but the claim gained widespread fame among specimen collectors for its exceptional secondary phosphate minerals and micro-crystals. Over decades of small-scale artisanal mining, local garimpeiros and visiting mineralogists have preserved prized specimens, making the Cigana claim an iconic classic Brazilian locality renowned for rare species like hydroxylherderite and brazilianite.
