Quartz
specimen number:
9892158
location:
Ambolo quartz mine, Marososona, Betafo, Vakinankaratra, Madagascar
description: The Ambolo quartz mine is situated within the rugged pegmatite fields of the Betafo district in the Vakinankaratra region of Madagascar, closely tied to the geological environment of the Sahatany Pegmatite Field near Mount Ibity. Regionally, the geology consists of ancient Precambrian metamorphic baselines intruded by complex granitic pegmatites rich in volatiles, which allowed large pockets of quartz to grow undisturbed over geological time. Mining and collecting at Ambolo are primarily carried out through artisanal methods, where local miners manually excavate deep pockets within weathered pegmatite veins to recover pristine mineral specimens. The mine has gained international renown among mineral collectors for producing magnificent groups of rock crystal, smoky quartz, and phantom quartz specimens characterized by high clarity, sharp crystal terminations, and unique internal growth features.
An aesthetically arranged grouping of mostly colorless to slightly reddish gem quartz crystals. The red color due to iron oxide. In great condition all around.
