Quartz
specimen number:
8911039
location:
Green Lion Mine, Chaffee Co., Colorado, USA
description: Located within the granite pegmatites and miarolitic cavities of Chaffee County, Colorado, the Green Lion Mine is a small-scale, privately operated mineral claim known primarily to local rockhounds and specimen collectors. Formed during the intrusion of Tertiary granitic batholiths in the Sawatch and Mosquito Mountain ranges, the geological environment produced rich pegmatite pockets containing smoky quartz crystals together with golden rutile, chlorite, epidote, and actinolite inclusions. Unlike larger historical ore mines in the district that were developed for silver or lead, the Green Lion Mine has operated mostly as a specimen locality where contemporary miners hand-extract collector-quality included quartz and associated pegmatite minerals.
A glassy loose sharply terminated gemmy deep smoky quartz crystal. Said to have inclusions of epidote, rutile, chlorite, and actinolite. In good condition.
