location:
Krystal Tips Claim, Peterson Mtn., Washoe Co., Nevada, USA
description: Situated within the granitic intrusion of Peterson Mountain in Washoe County, Nevada, near Hallelujah Junction, the Crystal Tips Claim is celebrated for producing some of the world's finest quartz specimens. Hydrothermal fluids circulating through fractures in the host granite formed large, hollow pockets where quartz crystals grew under ideal, unobstructed conditions. Specimen collecting and small-scale mining in the area gained momentum during the late twentieth century as diggers unearthed extraordinary combination pieces, including vibrant purple amethyst and rich brown smoky quartz. The deposit is especially famous for producing magnificent scepter quartz crystals, reverse scepters, and floaters, making it an iconic destination for mineral collectors seeking world-class American quartz specimens.
A grouping of glassy gemmy smoky quartz crystals with little attached matrix. There is one prominent large crystal present, several smaller ones attached along one lower side. Slight micro-damage present. The specimen comes with a label from the collection of Ray DeMark, he collected the piece in June, 2010.
